//// Welcome to Grade 9 English! This year we'll be learning lots of fun and fantastic things!

Identity & Belonging – We will read autobiographical texts, think about what makes us who we are, discuss how we think of other people and groups, and try to solve a difficult dilemma in a science fiction scenario.

Creative Writing – Learn how to improve your writing by making it stronger, more interesting, and more creative! We will read excerpts of books including Harry Potter and Coraline, and will learn about the most important elements of a good story.

The Arts – We will read about and discuss a crazy castle in France, some famous paintings from around the world, and even look at video games to see if they can be considered art.

Argue & Persuade – This unit will give you the skills to convince others of your point of view. We will listen to famous speeches, hold a debate, and learn all about effective ways to argue for our ideas in a piece of writing.

Mysteries – Do you think Yetis really exist in the Himalayan mountains? Who built the statues on Easter Island and why? Let’s find out together as we explore fascinating and mysterious subjects from around the world.

Character vs. Nature – “To Build A Fire”, a classic short story by Jack London, is our focus for this unit while we sharpen our reading skills. Be prepared for a tale of survival in the wilderness, and to work in groups creating your own play about this theme.
